CCBC, Partners Give Away 450 Meals to SNAP Recipients During Government Shutdown

Chicago is a city with heart. When residents lost their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the longest government shutdown in history, all we could think about was how we could help.

We’re grateful to our partners who share our commitment to supporting families. During the crisis, CCBC was joined by Bally’s Chicago, UJAMAA Construction, Brown & Momen, McHugh Concrete Construction, UCAN Chicago, Parkway Garden Christian Church, Gilbane Building, d’Escoto Inc., and Christmas in the Wards to host two meal giveaways at UCAN in North Lawndale on the West Side and one at Parkway Garden Christian Church on the South Side.

“The Chicago Community Builders Collective (CCBC) is dedicated to creating opportunities that strengthen our city and its people,” said a CCBC representative. “We’re proud to stand with local residents in their times of need.”

Over the three events, volunteers distributed a total of 450 sandwiches with a side and a drink to SNAP recipients. The meals were purchased from Alex’s Catering, a local food truck vendor that does business at various construction sites in the city, and UCAN and CCBC supplied beverages.

“Bally’s Chicago Casino is honored to support UCAN alongside the Chicago Community Builders’ Collective,” said Monica Scott, Vice President of Community Engagement at Bally’s Chicago. “Through our donation and on-site food distribution, we’re helping provide nourishment and hope to those in need.”

Jimmy Akintonde, President and CEO of CCBC joint venture partner UJAMAA Construction, said he believes CCBC’s success is measured by its impact on the community. “Through this partnership to support families in need, we’re creating impact.”

Brown & Momen President and CCBC joint venture partner Ernest Brown said strengthening communities goes hand in hand with building strong structures. “Giving back and supporting our neighbors is part of who we are, and we’re proud to stand alongside our partners to help families facing food insecurity.”
